What is a Rapid Strep Test used for?

The rapid strep test helps to determine whether or not you may have strep throat (Group A Streptococcus). Strep throat is a bacterial infection that affects the back of the throat and tonsils. This infection causes these areas to become irritated, swollen and cause a sore throat that makes it painful to swallow. White or yellow spots may coat the back of the throat and tonsils. Additionally, lymph nodes in the neck may become swollen and tender to touch.

In children, the following symptoms may occur:

  • Throat pain
  • Painful swallowing
  • Red and swollen tonsils, that may have white or yellow spots or patches
  • Tiny red spots on the area at the back of the throat
  • Tender and swollen tender lymph nodes in the neck
  • Fever
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Stomach aches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Restlessness
  • Rash

What do I need to do to prepare for the at home test?

There is no special preparation to perform this test. You should note any current medications, such as antibiotics, that you are currently or have recently taken.

What do the results mean?

A negative strep screen might mean that there is a cause other than strep throat for your symptoms, but this can be dependent on the quality of the sample obtained. Please use this test in consultation with the free telehealth consultation and follow the recommendations of the provider. We do not recommend that you assume that a negative result means that strep throat is completely ruled out. A positive strep screen most often means group A streptococcus is present, and confirms that you have strep throat. Antibiotics are usually indicated in this context, so please take advantage of the included telehealth consult and get your prescription!

How do I initiate a physician consult?

After you complete the home test and get a result, follow the instructions in your kit to book a free virtual physician consult with our partner Physician 360 and receive a prescription, if needed.
