Description

Why should I be concerned about Heavy Metals?

Heavy metal poisoning is a serious risk. Cadmium, Arsenic, Lead, and Mercury are all heavy metals found naturally in the environment, certain foods, medicines, and even water. These potentially harmful metals can get into your system in different ways. You might breathe them in, eat them, or absorb them through your skin. If too many metal/s get into your body, it can cause heavy metal poisoning. This can lead to serious health problems that include organ damage, behavioral changes, and difficulties with thinking and memory.

What is the Heavy Metals screening test for?

The Heavy metal blood test is a group of tests that measure the levels of four potentially harmful metals (Cadmium, Arsenic, Lead, and Mercury). Heavy Metal testing is used to find out if you have been exposed to certain metals, and how much of the metal is in your system. Screening involves simple blood tests that reports on the levels of the heavy metals in the body. These sample collections can be conveniently performed from the comfort of home.

Why should I consider taking a Heavy Metal Blood Test?

You should consider taking this test if you have had a history of exposure to, or believe you may have been exposed to, potentially harmful levels of cadmium, arsenic, lead, or mercury.

If you have symptoms of heavy metal poisoning such as any of the following, you should immediately consult with your healthcare provider:

  • Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Tingling in the hands and feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chills
  • Generalized weakness

Will I need to do anything to prepare for the test?

Some fish and shellfish contain high levels of mercury, so you should avoid eating seafood for 48 hours before being tested.

What do the results mean?

If your heavy metal tests show high levels of a metal, you will need to completely avoid exposure to that metal and consult with your healthcare provider.  Your health care provider may recommend chelation therapy. Chelation therapy is a treatment where you take a pill or get an injection that works to remove excess metals from your body.

If your heavy metal tests are low, but you still have symptoms of exposure, it is still recommended that you see your healthcare provider.
